On November 6, 2016, in its Orchestrion Concert Hall, the RNO presented a goodwill concert for students in children’s homes and special music schools, performing Andrei Rubtsov’s work, Alena’s Flower (Аленький цветочек).
Composed for orchestra and narrator and based on the Sergei Aksakov fairy tale of the same name, the work was commissioned by the RNO in 2014 and has received rave reviews. The RNO performed the work three times during its 2014-2015 season, with Alexander Oleshko as narrator, and each time young listeners were bowled over.
Rubtsov’s Alena’s Flower is a new interpretation of the famous history of the Russian beauty and a miracle, and is an original and integrative piece. For this performance, the composer himself was at the conductor’s podium, and Alexander Oreshko reprised his role as narrator. The concert was made possible through the generous support of Boeing.
